How to Make Your Own Bathroom Cleaning Products

By

We all know how bad a bathroom can get, even in a short amount of time. It's one of the most important rooms to keep disease and germ free. Commercial bathroom cleaners promise a lot and have a hefty price tag attached, inside are incredibly harsh chemicals that may carry more health risks than we realize.

But there are alternatives. Cleaners that kill germs, fight soap scum, and make your faucets shine without the inherent dangers that harsher chemicals present. Here are some great recipes and tips to keep your bathroom clean and fresh for a fraction of the price.

All Purpose Bathroom Cleaners
3 Tbs. Baking Soda
3 Tbs. Vinegar
Spray Bottle Full of Water

Mix baking soda and vinegar into spray bottle full of water. Use this solution to scrub non-porous surfaces. It tackles hard water stains and soap scum wonderfully! The vinegar is also a great germ killer. This can smell a bit like pickles so add a few drops of essential oils to mask the smell.

Homemade Bleach (1 cup hydrogen peroxide 3 Tbs. lemon juice 15 cups water)
A Few Drops of Essential Oils

This solution is great for any surfaces and kills bathroom germs like a champ. This recipe makes a lot so have several spray bottles handy to divvy up between all your bathrooms.

Anti-Mold Spray

For some of us with older homes, we find ourselves fighting mold everywhere. Here are some safe alternatives for the conventional chemical cleaners.

1 Teaspoon Tea Tree Oil
2 Cups Water

Mix together thoroughly and pour into a handy spray bottle. Tea Tree Oil is an absolutely wonderful antiseptic. A little goes a long way so use only a few drops of the Tea Tree Oil in any solution you make.

Glass Cleaner

I love this glass cleaner. Remember, to give the solution time to evaporate from the glass. It does not evaporate as quickly as commercial cleaners, but it does give you that streak free shine! This solution contains ammonia so be sure to keep it away from any chlorine or bleach. If the liquids mix together it can create a very toxic fume.

Mix 3 Tbs of Ammonia
1 Tbs Distilled White Vinegar
Into 16 oz. spray bottle

Mix all ingredients together in the spray bottle. Wipe mirror off with a cloth that does not leave a lot of fibers behind. Microfiber works great here.

Clogged Drains

Clogged drains can be a huge problem. I have had a lot of success with this solution. Depending on the clog, you may need to do this a few times to completely clear it up.

½ cup baking soda
1 cup Distilled White Vinegar

Pour baking soda down the drain, then pour half the vinegar. It will bubble and fizz eating away at the clog. Cover with a warm wet cloth for five to ten minutes. Pour the rest of the vinegar down and wait another five to ten minutes.

Deep Cleaning Tile Floor Cleaner

This solution for the really grimy and messy floors.

½ Cup Borax
1 gallon hot water
Pail

Dissolve borax and water, mop as usual. Quick tip: Put a normal rag on your Swiffer to save money on Swiffer wet cloths.
